Utilized as a burial place from 1742 until 1910, this cemetery is the final resting place of over 2,000 people, and was laid out by Nicolaus Ludwig, Count von Zinzendorf, whom was an important figure in Bethlehem’s early Moravian community. The cemetery known as God’s Acre, sits north and east of the oldest buildings in Bethlehem, which comprised the core of the original Moravian settlement, and has remained largely intact, even as the land around it became built up as Downtown Bethlehem developed and commercialized in the 19th and 20th Centuries. Today, the cemetery is part of the Central Bethlehem Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, and expanded to include additional buildings in 1988, and is part of the Historic Moravian Bethlehem District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places and as a National Historic Landmark in 2012.
