Three Fantomes
Department of Defense caption: Three survey motorboats line up beside the HMAS Leeuwin just before going out for the beach land survey during Exercise Tandem Thrust 2001. Exercise Tandem Thrust 2001 is a combined United States and Australian military training exercise. This biannual exercise is being held in the vicinity of Shoalwater Bay training area, Queensland, Australia. More than 27,000 Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines are participating, with Canadian units taking part as opposing forces. The purpose of Exercise Tandem Thrust is to train for crisis action planning and execution of contingency response operations.
Additional information: The vessels depicted are Fantome class survey motor launches, rafted up to the side of their mothership, the survey ship HMAS Leeuwin. Another survey ship, a Paluma class vessel, is located in the background. At the time of this photo, RAN survey vessels were painted white, as opposed to the naval grey of the rest of the fleet (the survey vessels would be repainted grey later in their careers).![]() |
