This work was originally comissioned by Joseph Bonaparte, then the King of Naples, and was intended to represent Napoleon. This version of the statue was never cast bacause of the patron's flight and the return of the Bourbons to Naples. However, the original design was repurposed to represent Charles III, the father of the new king.
